Ruth Wolfe Waring, 97, of Arnold, MD died on November 4th after a long period of declining health. She was born on September 11, 1914 in Mr. Airy, NC to Henry and Mamie Wolfe. An only child, she graduated from Salem College in 1935 with degrees in music and English. She moved to New York City where she accepted a position teaching English in Puerto Rico for one year. On her return she taught music at the New York Institute for The Blind. There she met William H. Waring, a shop teacher at the school, and they were married on August 28, 1938. The family moved to North Carolina in 1947 and she taught piano lessons for over 40 years to multiple generations in the Elkin community. She was a member of the First Methodist Church and was active in its choir, handbells, and Circles. She sang in the annual Messiah concert with the Community Chorus for over 40 years.

Mrs. Waring was a patron of the arts and participated in many of the Foothills Theatre productions. She loved to travel and visited 29 countries on five continents. She is survived by her son, William M. Waring (and his wife Marie) of Severna Park, MD, her daughter, Mary Dent (and her husband Tom) of Arnold, MD, and by 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to a Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 11 am at the First Methodist Church of Elkin. The family will receive visitors after the service followed by private burial at the Society of Friends cemetery in White Plains.

Mr. Henry WOLFE visited his father, Esq. W. H. WOLFE at
Union Hill last week. He reports the farmes in fine condition in the western part of the county.and says the work is progressing rapidly on the new railroad from Elkin to Sparta.

John married Mary Bethania (Mamie) MARSHALL on 8 Jun 1910 in Mount Airy, Surry County, North Carolina. Mary (daughter of Samuel Edward MARSHALL and Martha Ellen BADGETT) was born on 25 Aug 1891 in White Plains, Surry County, North Carolina; died on 25 Jan 1977 in Elkin, Surry County, North Carolina; was buried on 28 Jan 1977 in White Plains, Surry County, North Carolina. He with his brother John Skidmore Marshall embarked in the manufacture of the famous Marshall wagon in White Plains, North Carolina. He was the first Republican Elected to the Senate of North Carolina from Surry County, 1895. On two other occasions he was elected to the Senate, and once to the House of Representatives. He also served as Post Master at Mt. Airy, North Carolina. Sam and Martha are both buried in the Friends Meeting Cemetery in White Plains.

The following excerpt was taken from "A Pocket Manual of North Carolina" by R. D. W. Connor, published in 1911, for the members of the General Assembly. He was a member of the House at that time.

Samuel E. Marshall, Republican, State Representative and Senator from Surry County, was born at White Plains, N. C. Son of J. M. And Christina Sparger Marshall. Educated at Boonville, N. C. Wagon and buggy manufacturer. State Senator, 1895, 1901, 1903. Presidential elector 1896. Interested in legislation affecting improvement of school, election, and road law. Member of Friend's Church; present elder; was Clerk Yadkin County Quarterly Meetings for years; also, Clerk of Surry Quarterly Meeting. Address: Mount Airy, N. C.

Samuel married Martha Ellen BADGETT on 26 Nov 1885 in Surry County, North Carolina. Martha (daughter of Presley BADGETT and Elizabeth MARION) was born on 14 Apr 1863 in Surry County, North Carolina; died on 16 Feb 1952 in Elkin, Surry County, North Carolina; was buried in Feb 1952 in White Plains, Surry County, North Carolina. 0022 - John Marion Marshall had twelve children by his wife, Christina Sparger. Then he left his family and went to Texas with another Frankie Pate. There it is reported that he raised another family of twelve children. I have no information about his death or where he is buried.
!Marshall 0241, pp. 1, 9 - This source, a letter from Robert K. Marshall to Gurney Robertson, dated 9/17/1925, sheds some light on John's second wife, Frankie Pate. It says that John wrote a letter to "Uncle Sam" (Samuel Edward Marshall?) and a letter to Martha Eleanor (Marshall) Saunders asking if he could return to Surry County with his "second wife." I am not sure that either letter exists now, or maybe they never did.

More information - Apparently he and Frankie went to Indianapolis, Indiana. There he met a man who owned a ranch in the area of San Antonio, Texas. The man hired John to go to Texas and look after his ranch. While John was in route to Texas, the man died in Indianapolis.

The census data below places him firmly in San Antonio, Texas in 1880. Apparently, Frankie had died.

Below is more information from Gilmer Robertson. He sent it to me January 5, 2002 in response to a message I broadcast to my distribution list offering a $100 reward for anyone who could find John.

Dear David,It is nice to get your emails although I seldom respond. I'm not sure if I ever told you this or not (I probably did, but it's been too many years to know) but my Aunt Bettye Marshall Robertson told me that her husband Merlin actually went to John Marion's grave in Texas. Merlin and Bettye lived in Waco for many years and my recollection is that she said Merlin set out to track his down and met one of John's sons or grandsons-she couldn't remember what town the grave was located in. Merlin and Bettye were cousins-Merlin's grandfather was John Marion and I believe that Bettye was John Marion's great-granddaughter. Bettye died in 1976 and I had talked with her about this probably in the early 70's so I am fuzzy on this one but it seems that John changed his name. I'm pretty sure she said he became just John Marion and dropped the Marshall completely. Well, that should be enough to confuse all of us- perhaps someday all of this will be discovered. Keep up the good work-I could use the $100 to pay for Xmas but I don't think I have the time to do any research. Perhaps we could check all of the death records in the Texas counties.
