Hello David,

I have found some info on your cousin, Robert K Marshall. I haven't been able to find any children yet & have talked to folks who knew them & they don't believe there were any children born to this marriage. His wife, Kathryn, was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Columbus & my guess was that he is also buried there. I have copied his obit from the newspaper & will also get hers if you want it - his doesn't tell where he was buried.

They were very prominent people and entertained famous people from all over; they lived in a beautiful large brick home that even had an elevator in it. The outside walls and the inside partitions were "three bicks thick". I have a picture of it for you; along with a couple of pages from a history book, his obit in Delaware & Columbus newspapers; a few newspaper articles that mention his first book, parties he attended for Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowden, and where he bequeshed money to one of the colleges he attended. This week I will see if we have the 1925 Ohio Wesleyan yearbook since he was said to have graduated that year. Might be fun to find a college picture of him, right?

I found my cousin, Robert Kossuth Marshall in your death and burial list, (April 8, 1996) but there was not a cemetery listed. Can you direct me to sources that will give me that information as well as information about his wife and children? He married Katherine Comstock. I Have a genealogy web site www.marshallgenealogy.org but I have not been able to find information about Robert K.

Thank you.

Robert Marshall Makes Bequest of $65,000
The Guilford Fund, continued from page 37
Robert K. Marshall '25 of Delaware, Ohio, a professor emeritus of English and creative writing at Ohio Wesleyan University, has left a bequest of $65,000 to establish a scholarship in his name at Guilford College.

The bequest, made through Guilford's Our Time in History campaign, has established the Robert Kossuth Marshall Scholarship Fund. Income from the fund will be used to provide need-based scholarships to students.

In announcing the gift, Guilford President Kent Chabotar said, Guilford College is, indeed, appreciative of this bequest by Robert Marshall. It is particularly significant that Mr. Marshall remembered his alma mater with this gift at the end of his life after achieving distinction as a faculty member at Ohio Wesleyan University.

Such endowed scholarship gifts are very important to Guilford in that they help other students receive an education here, and they also help us in recruiting in a very competitive higher education market.

After graduating from Guilford, Marshall received his Master of Arts degree from Haverford College. He also studied at the University of North Carolina, Harvard University, Northwestern University and Iowa State University. From 1937 until his retirement in 1969, he was a member of the faculty at Ohio Wesleyan University. From 1937-39, Marshall was a visiting assistant professor at Guilford College. He was married to the former Kathryn Combstock of Columbus, Ohio.

Marshall died several years ago, but college officials said the bequest could not be announced until details of his estate were settled.

As a student at Guilford, Marshall was president of the sophomore class, first president of the Men's Student Council, editor in chief of the student newspaper, secretary of the Dramatic Council, and secretary to Guilford College President Raymond Binford. He also was an actor in several theatre productions at Guilford.

An author as well as an educator, Marshall wrote several published novels. In 1949, he received the Ohioanna Medal for the most distinguished novel by an Ohioan that year. In 1953, he received a citation from the Friends of American Authors for the most distinguished novel by a midwesterner that year. He also was president of the Ohio Poetry Association from 1955-57.

Attached is some information on the Alexander family.

Again I will say I do not feel that Jonathan and Nancy Short Richardson are the parents of William Richardson. Most researchers show him as their son but the marriage license shows his mother as Rebecca no father listed.

...the decendants of Abel Sparks and Sarah"Cockran" believe that Sarah's father was Humphrey Cockerham of Wilkes Co. NC because Abel Soarks was living on contiguous property to Humphrey on Jan. 25th, 1800 - deed book GH p.26; and on Dec 12th 1801 , a deed from Humphrey to Abel Sparks was made for 150 acres for 100 pounds sterling - deed book F1 p.183. Abel was born about 1778, died 1872. Sarah was born about 1779, died Aug. 12th, 1853, aged 74 years, in Wisconsin....The decendants know that Sarah was supposed to have been a Cochran. It is a long standing tradition because one of her daughters named her second son James Cochran Kirkpatrick.

36927 This information was in a GEDCOM file sent by Carolyn Carson dated 3/7/2000 (Marshall 0357).

Gravestone was viewed by Nancy Carson and Carolyn Carson on May 27, 1992. We thought that it said "died Feb. 12, 1850, onlly 38 years of his age". However since his birth date was 1842, and the cemetery records state that the last two
digits of the year are hard to read, we assume that the date should be 1880. There was also a tombstone next to his that was for Agnes T. Cowgill. We thought it said wife of Dr. T. W. Cowgill, died Aug 26, 1853, aged 34 years.

The cemetery records that that she was buried w/o W. W., so we apparently misread the stone. We had previously thought that Tarvin Cowgill never married, and if the 1842 birthdate is correct, he would have been only 11 years old when she died at 34. Other small stones buried near Tarvin Cowgill are as follows:

What appears to say "Ella T.", "Edward","Sarah" "In memory of Clarenda Cowgill who dies 6/9/1838, age 7 mo. 4 day". Sarah's stone says, died 11/27/1839 - 1 y, 6 m, 17 d. Alexander, son of H. E. & (E. N.?) Cowgill, born
3/11/1839, died 11/12/1839. Cemetery records show born 5/11/1839.

Other stones nearby say "In memory of Mary, consort of John Cowgill and departed this life 12/18/1839, aged 34 y, 4 m." "Elisha Cowgill", died Sept. 10, 1855, aged
82 y, 6 m, 26 d."

Clyde were cousins). Just as a matter of information.
