      Subject: slight spelling correction request

      Hi David -

This is BETTY Lois Davis, daughter of William Levi Davis and Gerthie Clytie Muckleroy. Actually just Gerthie is ok for my mother, but I would appreciate it if you could change the spelling of my name FROM Bettie Lois Davis TO Betty Lois Davis. Small matter. If you don't get around to it, that is ok. Maybe the next time you replace it, you might fix that. I actually need to look over your database and see if I have any other corrections.

Since my aunt, my father's sister, died this year, I'm sending a group sheet for the family.

Unfortunately, time is short this time of year.

I hope you have a nice Christmas.

      Betty Stokes in Houston

Research Notes (Aug 2007): ARCHIE OLIVER DAVIS

As I remember, Granddaddy Davis was a quiet, slow moving man. When he talked and needed to take a slight break to get his thoughts together, he said "and er uh."

I was told his mother spoke the same way. He had a twinkle in his eye. I don't
remember his farming all that much because we usually arrived in the middle of
the day and he was not a young man any more. In earlier days, he farmed and had cows and chickens with Aunt Myrtle on the farm they had after WW II was over. Later, he had a garden and raised cows and took milk and produce into town to sell it.

My Aunt Adarene, my mother's sister, married George Van Burrows. George was a
teller at a Bank in Nacogdoches. When Granddaddy went to do banking, he always
waited in George's line. I think they asked about each other's families.

George thought a lot of him. His house was near the Burrows farm.

Other than visiting Granddaddy and Grandmother Davis, I don't remember much
other than what I was told. I do remember going out there when he was up in
years and he was up on the roof making repairs. He had to stop when he had a
slight heart attack. Aunt Myrtle said he went out West I think she said and worked as a clerk in a store a relative ran. It might have been Uncle Johnny, but I'm not sure. West was anything west of Nacogdoches but it was probably more like San Antonio.

He was the oldest of 10 children, the son of John Oliver Davis and Amy Angeline "Angie" Britain.

I have some old pictures of the family. Some are pictures of him up on
scaffolding working on building the Excelsior School and Sardis Baptist Church.

Grandmother and Levi and Myrtle are in the picture. There is another picture of the day Sardis Baptist Church had a Baptizing in the Creek - Attoyac I think. At one time, I could figure out which one was Granddaddy.

I still have a little handmade high chair that was made for Granddaddy by his
father in 1883. I don't remember it from my childhood, but it came with me when we moved back to my Grandmother Muckleroy's after my father died. It was stored in their smokehouse until Aunt Adarene rescued it and restored it. Bugs had eaten the cowhide in the seat and she and her brother, Clifton, wove a new seat for it.
