Received e-mail from a Dr. James Anderson a retired History teacher that lives up around Cleveland. He descends from Milton D. (Douglas) Love and Rachel D. Vanhoy daughter of James Hamilton Vanhoy. Milton and Rachel were his mothers great great grandparents and his records show that Rachel's middle name was Dorcas. In checking source of name it is biblical but it is also Gaelic-Scottish. I was looking through a lot a material this weekend and may have come up with an answer to whom Frances is.

We know from her tombstone that she was born Dec. 1790 and that she was born in VA but bought parents are foreign born.

Then there are these facts:
1. Frances and James had Clayton in May 1807, their 1st born.
2. their last born was born Jan 1830 and his name is John Marshall Vanhoy
3. James's Brother Abraham married Verlinda Marshall in Dec. 1805 and we do not have a date on the marriage of James & Frances but I suspect between late 1805 to mid 1806.

Okay there is now the possibility that James and Abraham were married on the same day and that they both married a Marshall be it sisters or cousins. I doubt that anyone will ever find proof of the actual date of James and Frances's marriage or her maiden name given that she was on 15-16 at the time of her wedding. Many have researched it and came up empty so given circumstantial evidence I figure I may be correct in my theory.

Comments welcome

On James H. Vanhoy b. 1775 d. 1845 as for his middle name. My thinking is Hamilton

Reasoning: In surveying My chart that I have it shows that the Vanhoy men in almost all cases named their sons after themselves, Father, brothers, and then there are numerous Claytons in the Vanhoy Men. Susanna Clayton must have been one very special person.

I heard the argument for Hart as the middle name but that Hart did not come into the family until after his birth so given there are several of his ancestors who were name Hamilton,Ham. I would say that his middle name is Hamilton and not Hart.

Another interesting feature James H. Vanhoy and his Wife Frances ( whom may have been a Love) had a son named John M. Vanhoy he is buried at Love Methodist cemetery Perry Township, Martin County, Ind. 2 miles NE of Loogootee, Ind. Wouldn't want to bet his middle name is Marshall would you ?

As for there son Charles Vanhoy (my gg grandfather) who married Rebecca Greenwell (who was Catholic) they were married by James Newton Love J.P. in Martin County I found a copy of the marriage license.

haven't really been able to sit down and do to much of this lately as other duties have taken up a lot of my time lately. It has been wonderful hearing from you David, and when I get my paper work completed here I will get back to you with all the info. There is one thing that does interest me, i have taken notice that a large segment of families and I mean 100's of families seem to have moved down the East Coast from Staten Island, NY, to Del, to Va. and then to NC. and they seemed to have done this all at the same time and stayed in touch with one another. I have tried finding just the right history book on NC. that would explain its settlement and the people that helped settle it and the various religious sects that were part of this settlement of NC. Once I have that and read it and then I will understand pretty-well what actually took place back then.

Well I have taken up enough of your time.
Take Care My Friend,
Paul VanHoy

David I thought you should be included in on this.

Interesting facts have arisen in the family of James Hamilton Vanhoy's his wife Frances b. Dec. 1790 Va. When and were her and James were married remains unknown in actuality but by mathematical equations it is suspected that they were married no earlier that DEC 1805 and not later than the summer of 1806.
James's Brother Abraham married Verlinda Marshall in Dec. 1805 and their first child, a son, was named John Marshall Vanhoy.
James and Frances had 11 children of which there were five boys and the youngest was named John Marshall Vanhoy and is buried at Love Cemetery, Martin County, IN at his father's right hand.
Given that before 1850 it was almost impossible to track down who was who we have all been left to deal with what written documents our ancestors have left behind to help in our research. I suspect that James H. Vanhoy's wife Frances's maiden name was Marshall and that they were married in a double ceremony with Abraham and Verlinda in Stokes County, NC.
Now on to the other part. I was under the impression that James and Frances had 5 boys and 5 girls but this past two weeks has uncovered some interesting facts.
James Hamilton Vanhoy died Aug. 20, 1845 and he died intestate (without a will).
The following summer a Probate hearing was held and a probate agreement signed or marked by members of the family leaving the estate to Frances, Rebecca, and Charles. The Document was signed on Aug. 3, 1846 and filed at the end of the month. In attendance were the following;

Rebecca Vanhoy
Joseph Hays & his wife
Elizabeth Hays (formerly Elizabeth Dobson born 1811 NC)
Milton D. Love and wife Rachel (Vanhoy) Love
John Vanhoy
Clayton Vanhoy & wife Mary (Walker) Vanhoy
William M. Fair & wife Nancy (Vanhoy b. Feb 19, 1808) Fair
Charles Vanhoy, Attorney

Not in Attendance or mentioned are Abraham Vanhoy who married Nancy Sullivan
and Permelia (Vanhoy) presumed to have died in Morgan County, IN in 1839

The odd thing that I caught was the attendance of Joseph Hays & his wife Elizabeth.
I did some research through the Family Search web site and found Joseph Hays married to Elizabeth Dobson b. 1811 NC. They were married Aug. 1830. I decided to go back a bit farther. The 70 Acres that James Hamilton Vanhoy purchased in 1829 in Perry Township, Martin County, IN. was from William and Elizabeth Dobson and there is a record of a Joseph Dobson who married an Elizabeth Vanhoy In NC on 31 Oct., 1826, I strongly suspect that this Elizabeth Vanhoy is the daughter of James Hamilton Vanhoy and Frances Marshall.
I also believe that Elizabeth Dobson b. 1811 NC is Elizabeth Vanhoy and she left some clues to her identity behind.
Joseph Hays and his wife Elizabeth Dobson had seven children and their first son b. 1831 was named William Clayton Hays the fifth child a girl b. 1840 was named Nancy and married a Stuckey.

The Census of 1830 for Perry Twp. Martin County, IN shows 5 girls in the household of James Vanhoy. The Census of 1840 only shows two. Two of the three that are not there are Rachel Vanhoy who married Milton D, Love Dec. 1835
and Permelia who married Lewis Scott Feb. 3, 1833 in Morgan County, IN.
The other I suspect was the widow of Joseph W. or William J. Dobson and married Joseph Hays Aug. 1830.

I meant to say that the Marshall family, among the women, would give their sons the middle name Marshall. This was passed onto me by a gentleman that had done considerable research on the Marshall family also. That is why I think that Frances is in fact a Marshall.

I leave you with this and if I have left out anything or there are questions please feel free to ask.

I hope that I have done the best to explain my presumption and the research that it is based upon.

Sincerely:
Paul D. VanHoy

No what I found out was that was that James David Vanhoy was actually born
1854 and died sometime after the Census of 1870 and most probably right about
1870.
He was buried at Love Cemetery behind his Grandfather.

Now next to James Hamilton Vanhoy's grave are two other plots which I intend
to investigate. They may be empty plots or the tombstones may well have been
knocked over years ago and be just below the surface. Won't be able to do so
until next spring when the ground has dried out some to get to the Cemetery.
The Month of Oct and NOV produced well over 14" of rain for SW Indiana this
year. Thank God it wasn't snow.

Hope that has everything clarified.
