| 29401 | Arthur Marshall forwarded the following message to me. - 6/14/2003 - DWM From: MPG949@aol.com To: arthurvm@msn.com Sent: Friday, June 04, 2004 5:21 PM Subject: Update from Roy and Colleen Pope "GREETINGS" - MARSHALL FAMILY MEMBERS - from Florida! We very much regret that we cannot be with all of you today, but wish to tell you that we're thinking about you and keeping each of you in our prayers. Roy and I are having some serious challenges now, preventing us from making any plans, long range, and so we are thankful to take one day at a time - which is all we have, you all probably know, anyway. I'm behind in keeping you posted about our lives - so here's a quick update: Roy has been battling polysythemia vera (blood cancer) for several years now. He is on an experimental drug, Thalidomide, along with Prednisone which seems to be effective in keeping his hemoglobin level up so that he does not have to go in for two units of blood every four weeks. Our lives are busy with frequent trips to the VA Hopsital and clinic - doctors and his oncologist. Since my retirement from the YMCA, I have been able to care-give at home and keep up with most things - with the help of our two daughters, Marsha and Janis. Lately though, it has been difficult for me since increased pain and stress with my right knee (osteo-arthritis) and the cortisone injections have ceased to be effective. I am now having a total knee replacement on June 16th and, hopefully, I'll be back in the running and in good, or at least, better shape with a couple of months to continue my responsibilities. Our travel plans for the past few years have been put on hold, but we are still hoping to see some of you in future days. Since Christmas, our family has kept us on our toes as we witnessed Marsha's last child, Stacie Greathouse, graduate on May 21st. Rose Elizabeth graduated from Circle Christian School last May, 2003 and just finished her first year at Bell Haven College in Maitland. I forgot to say that Rose is the 5th child of Janis and her husband, Tim Spalding. Jessica, Janis' oldest, was married 2 years ago and presented her parents with a beautiful baby daughter, Luanna Ada (named after her Aunt Luanne, our youngest daughter whom we lost at age 20 to Lupus.) David, Janis' #2 son, and his wife Donna had a baby girl in November two years ago, and are expecting another in September. WOW!! Great to be great grandparents!! Christina, Janis's #2 daughter, is a nurse and has spent the last two summers in Peru and Mexico doing youth ministry work and learning more Spanish. Well, when she came home last summer, she was engaged to Jair Colli, a civil engineer and representative of Campus Crusade for Christ in Mexico. She is now finalizing plans for the wedding on August 7th in Merida, Mexico - AND will be living in Mexico. As you see, we are all busy living life and being thankful for God's many blessings. Please let us hear all your news, and I promise to return your notes. Our Love to EVERYONE and "HAPPY FAMILY REUNION"! Colleen and Roy (P.S. Attached, hopefully, is a recent picture of Roy and I with our daughters Marsha and Janis.) | SPALDING, David (I41037)

| 29418 | BECKONHALL@aol.com Becky FlemingNorthern VirginiaMonday, April 28, 2003 11:58 PM David - Would like to thank you for such a wonderful site! I have been searching for months for Mary Mathews family. Mary married James Tolbert. My birth dates are slightly different from yours, but I took mine from the Surry County, N.C. census. (See below) Hope to see more about James! Will let you know what I find! Have you heard anything about the Mathews being Cherokee? Kind regards, Becky Fleming Northern Virginia First Generation ---------------------------------------- 1. James M. Tolbert (Talbert). Born in 1829. James M. died on 12 Apr 1914, he was 85. On 18 Feb 1851 when James M. was 22, he first married Mary Polly Mathews, daughter of William Mathews & Blanche McMillan, in Surry County, N.C. - Bondsman John Huchens. Born in 1836. Mary Polly died in Jul 1910, she was 74. They had the following children: i. Susan. Born in 1852 in North Carolina. ii. Symira (Symara) Jane. Born ca 1853 in North Carolina. iii. Mary Miralda. Born on 28 Apr 1855 in North Carolina. Mary Miralda died on 24 Mar 1947, she was 91. 2 iv. Elizabeth "Betty" (1856-1942) v. William M.. Born in 1859 in North Carolina. vi. John Boyden W.. On 26 Jun 1885 when Elizabeth "Betty" was 28, she married John Samuel Amburn, son of Jason Amburn & Sarah George. Born on 29 Aug 1849 in Wythe County, Virginia. John Samuel died in Surry County, N.C. on 3 May 1920, he was 70. They had the following children: i. Susan Litisha (Adopted) (1882-1961) ii. John William (1867-) iii. Samuel Columbus "Lummie" (1889-)iv. Lucy J. (1892-)v. George W. (1894-1965) vi. Preston Joseph (1896-) vii. Andrew Lafayette (1898-) 3. Laura Ann Frances Tolbert. Born on 25 Apr 1864 in Surry County, N.C. Laura Ann Frances died in Forsyth County; Buried at Crooked Oak (no marker) on 22 Mar 1949, she was 84. According to the 1910 Surry County Census, Laura had 15 children with 11 living in 1910. Laura's parents were from Pilot Mountain, N.C. It is believed that Laura was pregnant with Walter when she married Fountain but Walter was not the son of Fountain. It is believed that his father was a Mr. Martin. Family members say that Laura had three children by Mr. Martin. She had a son Sid Tolbert when she married Fountain. And her daughter Meda (or Media) that married a Linville is believed to also be the daughter of Mr. Martin. After Fountain died and Laura was not able to care for herself, she was taken to Ben & Susie Jarrell' s home. They were not really able to care for her. Laura wanted to live with her granddaughter that she raised, Marie Jarrell Cockerham. Laura had raised Marie and Mary, the illegitimate children of Laura's daughter Dazzie Jarrell Skinner. Inez Bobbitt, another granddaughter looked after her for a while. Eventually she was taken to her son Walter's house. There she fell off the bed and broke her hip and after that they put her in a rest home. Laura was not good to Marie's sister Mary like she was to Marie. Family members were told by Laura many times that "she loved every bone in Marie's body" (Per Inez Bobbitt 2/23/96) On 18 May 1890 when Laura Ann Frances was 26, she first married E. Lafayette Fountain Jarrell, son of Ellis Franklin Jarrell & Nancy Senter. Born on 18 Jan 1867 in Surry County, N.C. E. Lafayette Fountain died in Stokes County , N.C. Buried at Crooked Oak (no marker) on 12 Jan 1947, he was 79. They had the following children:i. Maggie Lourane (1892-1970) ii. Dazzie Dean (1893-1976) iii. Lula Bell (1894-1900) iv. Dama Martha (Bessie) (1896-1979)v. Susan Bertha (1899-1984)vi. Phoebe Ellen (1900-) vii. "Columbus" Howard Columbia (1902-1932) viii. Ellis Parker (1904-1979) ix. Raymond "Sampson" Lafayette (1908-1958) x. WandaShe second did not marry Unknown. They had the following children: i. Sid ii. Meda (Media) iii. James Walter (1890-1969) 4. Julia Fannie Jarrell - Tolbert. Born in 1848. The 1850 Surry Census shows the the Fountain Gerald household are Frances 51, Peachy W. 27, Mariah 26, Ann E. 22, Will R. 17, Albert H. 16, Ellis 14, Rufus A. 11, Robert W. 10, Julia F. 1 1/2. It is believed that Julia is not the daughter of Fountain & Fannie, but their granddaughter. A fellow Tolbert researcher states that Julia F. is the illegimate daughter of Nancy Fountain Jarrell. The father was a Tolbert. You will note that the mother of Susan Amburn (wife of Richard Walter Jarrell) is a Julia Tolbert born ca. 1850. Could this be the same Julia F. that was in the Fountain/Fannies household in 1850? On 14 Mar 1870 when Julia Fannie was 22, she married John Samuel Amburn, son of Jason Amburn & Sarah George, in Surry County, N.C. Born on 29 Aug 1849 in Wythe County, Virginia. John Samuel Amburn later married Elizabeth "Betty" Tolbert. He died in Surry County, N.C. on 3 May 1920, he was 70. They had the following children: i. Jesse Martin (1870-) ii. Susan Jenette (1872-1961) iii. Sallie Litisha "Lettie" (1874-) iv. James J. (ca1877-) v. Mary M. (1879-) | TOLBERT, Susan (I24051)

| 29419 | Before the Federal Census of 1840, Harden Cockerham must have died, because Frances Cockreham appeared in the census as head of the family. She was listed in Floyd County , Kentucky, pg.264 in the 30-40 age group with one male under 5 and one male of 5-10 years. In 1842 and 1843, Fanny or Frances appeared in the Floyd County Tax lists; then in October 1843 she married Benjamin Johnson. In the 1850 Census of Morgan County Kentucky, the household 827 of Benjamin Johnson, age 55, stone mason, contained Fanny, age 45, born in South Carolina, Elias, 17 born in North Carolina, and William, born in North Carolina, among others. The census taker failed to write down that Elias and William were Cockerhams, not Johnsons. Married 2nd. Benjamin Albright Johnson, Oct. 10, 1844 Morgan Co. Ky. by Raney Maxey, Minister. She died in Portsmouth Ohio around 1864, having fled Ky on account of being threatened by Southern sympathizers. | GREENWELL, Frances (Fanny) (I23733)

| 29421 | Betsy was in Palmetto Richland Hospital when she died. She was in the hospital for two weeks as they diagnosed her condition. It was Metastatic Breast Cancer. She declined rapidly and on Monday morning, September 17, 2018 she took her last breath. I was by her bed, along with my daughter, Susan, and my son, David, when she died. At about 10:30 am she became agitated and struggled for breath. She coughed raggedly and struggled to get a breath. Then she settled down for a few minutes. At 11:00 am she was again agitated and struggled to breath. She coughed two or three times, raised her head up off the bed and lowered it back down. She stopped breathing. I felt for her heart and it was not beating. She was gone. She was a good woman and worked with hundreds of children at Lexington United Methodist Church over the years, guiding their faith journeys. I miss her greatly. She was cremated and interred in the Greenlawn Memorial Park Main Columbarium II 3 C Find-A-Grave Memorial #193905448 | TALBOT, Ruth Elizabeth (Betsy) (I2)

I have 600 names entered so far in the program Family Tree Maker. I obtained most of my information from my uncle, Norman Nale. On my grandfather's side of the family, I have information on the Nale family back to Germany around 1720 and the Denny family back to 1786. (I found further information on our Denny family on the internet back to Ireland around 1763. I understand that information found on the internet is a starting point for finding the actual records.) On my grandmother's side, Marshall's you know and the Overton family back to 1797. (I found our Overton family back to England about 1547 in the LDS Ancestral File.) I don't know how to send gedcoms or data bases or whatever people send. The easiest way for me is to cut and paste and send my notes.
