I am keeping my fingers crossed your info can help provide proof for the DAR, and I am most happy to share what I know about my closer relatives in relation to the Spargers/Spargurs. My maiden name is Allison Hope Smith, married name Parrott. My parents are Judith Carolyn Goad and Joseph Vaden Smith, both originally from Surry County, N.C. My father, who goes by Joe V. Smith, is the son of Howard Albert Smith and Verda Elizabeth Vaden. Albert, my grandfather, was the son of Joseph Smith and Laura Jane Perkins. Laura Jane was the daughter of Margaret Jane Sparger and Leonadus/Leonzo/Leander Smith (there seems to be several variations of his first name in public documents, but he seemed to go by Lee). Margaret Jane was his first wife, and she was the daughter of William W. Sparger, son of John W. Sparger. William had numerous brothers and sisters, one of whom was Murlin Sparger. Murlin's descendants are linked in the DAR. William appears to have died at a relatively early age, and the story I found is that he was murdered by robbers while running a wagon transport between Surry County and Fayetteville. There is a date of 1836 as an estimated death, but Margaret Jane was born in 1839, so I suspect that wherever that date is from it may be incorrect. Margaret Jane also was living with the Murlin Sparger family in one census. The Perkins family Margaret Jane married into appears to have had many Quakers. I know much more about the Smiths. There is a Smith family cemetery in Surry County on the outskirts of Mt. Airy, and family members had small houses all in that area. Many of those older relatives were living when I was a kid, and their properties are now owned by other non-family members (which must seem a little weird considering that cemetery is in their backyards). But the largest portion of the property which is undeveloped is now owned by my dad. The little four room house he grew up in is still there, too, where my grandmother lived by herself for many years after my grandfather died. And she just died last year at the age of 101. Going back to the Spargers, my father was surpised when I told him about John W. 's wife, Christina Frey. I am sure you know that Christina came out of the Moravian community and my dad was unaware he had that lineage in his tree. There are many Moravians on my mom's side. What was even more exciting for me was to find that Christina's mother is buried in the cemetery at Old Salem in Winston-Salem. I had been to Old Salem many times and it was thrilling to realize I had a family connection there. My mom and I (she lives about 10 minutes from Winston) have visited the gravesite. Her Moravian ancestors are mostly buried in Bethania, and I am hoping to get back up to NC soon to visit there, but also the Salem Methodist cemetery where so many of the Spargers are buried. A little about myself: I live in Dalton, Ga. with my husband. I have two sons, one married and living in Chicago, the other currently in Orlando doing an internship. I have four siblings: one full sister, Jennifer Vaden Smith, married with one son and living in California. My parents are divorced, and my dad remarried and had two more children: my half-sister Laure Elizabeth Smith DeDominco, who passed away last year from breast cancer, and Dr. Joseph Andrew (Andy) Smith, married with two kids in Wilmington, NC. I've kind of jumped all over the place here, but it's such a huge topic to cover. I would love to know more about the Spargers as well, although I did find one extensive website under the original German name. Bitsy sent off to Raleigh requesting a copy of the marriage bond for Margaret Jane Sparger and Lee Perkins, because they often listed the parents, so we are hoping to have that link soon. I was advised that Shelton collapsed there and has died. The facility/EMTs performed CPR for 45 minutes to no avail. It appears to have been a heart attack, but not confirmed. I will be going to Carrboro in the morning to make arrangements for Shelton. He had a prepaid plan at Walker's funeral home in Chapel Hill on Franklin Street. I will e-mail you all with more details as soon as they are made. I am anticipating a grave side service for him at Cedar Grove Methodist Church, on Jones Ferry Road in Pittsboro NC later this week. She was 94 and she died in her home in Smithfield. I have attached a not-so-recent picture and the beginnings of an obituary. We have not yet determined when the service will be. Could you send this out to your Marshall email list? I hope you are doing well, Frances Aycock Kiker Obituary Evelyn Turner Aycock was born August 6, 1918, in Baltimore, MD. She passed away at her home in Smithfield on October 25, 2012 at the age of 94. She and her parents (the late Dewey Harris and Macie Marshall Turner moved back to North Carolina when she was very young, living in several towns in the western part of the state. She graduated from high school in Lincolnton, NC and attended High Point College for two years. In 1941, she married Richard Noble Aycock, Jr. While Richard was in service during World War II, she became the first woman to work in the Weather Bureau at the Greensboro-High Point Airport. She worked as a meteorological aide for observing and forecasting weather. She was the only woman on the East Coast to operate a radiosonde machine (which gathered atmospheric conditions while attached to a hydrogen filled balloon) during those years. She also worked at Winston-Salem and Charlotte airports. In 1947, she and her husband moved to Smithfield, NC to establish Aycock Propane Gas Company. She assisted in the business until she began to work for The Smithfield Herald in 1960, as a bookkeeper. She retired in 1982 as the office manager. After she retired, she and her husband took many trips around the USA and Canada and traveled to South Korea when her daughter and family were living there. Mrs. Aycock supported many civic organizations with her time and leadership. These include the Smithfield Woman?s Club, Johnston County Genealogical Society, Contact Telephone Ministry, and United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a charter member of the Smith-Bryan Daughters of the American Revolution. She has been a member of the Centenary Methodist Church since 1947 and was member of the Sadie Spiers Circle there. Evelyn and Richard Aycock were married 65 years until his death on May 20, 2006. Hope it wasn't too much of a hassle. Sorry about that. I did not know that Thine married a Gerrey as well. My Aunt Sandy told me that one of the Gerrey sons drowned but she did not know which one. She is 20 years younger than my Dad and did not spend alot of time with him as he was in the service. My Aunt Mozelle died about 10 years or so ago, shortly after I finally met her. I will never forget those blue eyes melding into mine. For the first time I saw where mine came from and could imagine what my Dad looked like face to face. She married Lester Lewis who also died about 2 or more years ago. Not sure exactly. Their son Jerry Lewis and I believe the other is Joseph(never met him) are still living in Winston Salem. Jerry is a wonderful guy and he had a lovely wife Janet but she died last year. They had 1 son Michael who is married now and lives in PA. My other Uncle Lester(Gerrey) went by Nick. He died a while ago too. His wife Gladys moved to Newport News with her son Ronny Gerrey and his wife Sydney after that. I do not know if Gladys is alive or not. I pretty much just get tidbits of info through my Mom when she gets a card from Sandy or now and then when I hear from Sandy. I thought my Aunt Florence died way before 1996 though. It is getting late, so I will write with all my siblings names and dates later. Three boys, three girls and also my childrens names and dates. Is there any other type of info you are needing? Please let me know. Do you know what country(ies) the lineage started from? Well, Friday the 13th held a little magic after all! I will never forget this day. It is great to be connecting with you. I'm really sorry about the name spelling thing. Have a great weekend! Karen:) | LEWIS, Lester (I41502)
