Dear David, the chart arrived two days ago, but, alas, I have not been able to study it. Unfortunately, I have had to have an infected molar extracted and have been under the weather. I should be better in a few days. I'm also having trouble with my lumbar nerve and may have to return to surgery. Not to worry----I will be fine!

Wow! you must be a computer genius!!!!! I am really impressed. Brains sure run in the Marshall family, don't they!

When it arrived, I took just a quick peek--not to correct or anything---just noticed that my husband should be James AlvinHuston (not Albin).

John married Lily Cora Overby. Their son Floyd Dock Marion was my great grandfather. He married Dora Geneva Shelton. Their son Floyd Gilmer Marion was my grandfather. He married Augustus Virginia Monroe. Their son Ronnie Michael Marion was my father. He married Debra Ann Danley & had me.

My great-grandfather was Armstead King, the older brother of John and my Great-grandmother, his wife, was Charity Venable, sister of Louisa Venable King. I wondered what happened to John & Louisa after 1870. I thought maybe the had followed Charity to Indiana where their twin brothers, Jesse & Augustus had gone. charity went there sometime after 1864 following the death of Armstead in the Civil War. she remarried in 1867. I have a lot of information the the Venable family. Do you know what may have become of Squire Venable, younger brother of Louisa and Charity? The last anyone can seem to find is when he was living in Carroll County with his mother and step-father. The Stafford line enters in when Laura, my grandmother and daughter of Armstead and Charity married my grandfather, Olive Stafford in Indiana Oliver's father was Levi Stafford, son of Robertson & Hannah Johnson Stafford from Kernersville, Forsythe County North Carolina. Hugh Black Family

Hugh Black (b. Feb. 17, 1891 )was the son of Hugh and Susan King Black of Mercer Co. On Nov. 30, 1917 he was married to Bessie Davis (b. Oct. 10, 1896), the daughter of Robert and Lilly Moss
Davis, also of Mercer Co. In 1926, Mr. and Mrs. Black moved to Spickard where Mr. Black was employed by the Rock Island Railroad from that time until his retirement. He passed away in 1969. Mrs. Black continues to occupy the home in Spickard where they had lived for many years. Their two children
also are Spickard residents. Roy, (b. March 15, 1920) moved to this community with his parents. On Jan.
27, 1940 he was married to Marjorie L. McLaughlin (b. May 20, 1921) at the Methodist Parsonage by Rev. Francisco. She was the daughter of William and Goldia Roberts McLaughlin of Mill Grove. They are the parents of one daughter, Deanna (b. May 7, 1944). She was married to James D. Proffitt (b.July 15, 1939), son of James D. and Letha Graham Proffitt, at Nurnberg, Germany on Aug. 21, 1962. Their children are Jeffrey Jay (Aug. 20, 1963) born in Nurnberg; Christopher Eric (b. May 12, 1965); and Tract DeAnn (b. July 3, 1969). The Proffitts reside in Trenton. Lenora (b. March 19, 1921) came to Spickard with her parents as a small child. She married Bert Washburn (b. Sept. 5, 1920), son of Alva and Ellen
Griffin Washburn. Bert has been in the construction business most of his life. They are the parents of one son, Dennie Nolan (b. March 9, 1947). Dennie is employed by the Missouri Highway
Department.

Huey Black of Spickard Dies

Huey J. Black, 78 of Spickard, died at 5:50 Monday evening at the Axtell Hospital in Princeton, after a lingering illness. The body was removed to the Wise funeral home in Spickard, where services will be conducted at 2 P.M., Wednesday, with burial in the Spickard Cemetery.

There is no scheduled visitation.

Mr. Black was a retired employee of the Rock Island Railroad and a veteran of World War I

He was born Feb. 17, 1891 in Mercer Co., Missouri, the son of Hugh and Susan King Black. He was married to Bessie Davis Nov. 30, 1917

Survivors include his wife, Bessie, of the home, one son Roy Black and one daughter Mrs. Bert Washburn, both of Spickard; two grandchildren, Mrs. Jim Proffitt of Trenton and Dennie Washburn of Spickard; two great-grandchildren and one brother King Black of Falls, Michigan, and three sisters Mrs. Maggie Alley of Mercer, Mrs. Roy Holt of Garnet, Kansas, and Mrs. Roy Groves of Leon, Iowa.

27, 1940 he was married to Marjorie L. McLaughlin (b. May 20, 1921) at the Methodist Parsonage by Rev. Francisco. She was the daughter of William and Goldia Roberts McLaughlin of Mill Grove. They are the parents of one daughter, Deanna (b. May 7, 1944). She was married to James D. Proffitt (b.July 15, 1939), son of James D. and Letha Graham Proffitt, at Nurnberg, Germany on Aug. 21, 1962. Their children are Jeffrey Jay (Aug. 20, 1963) born in Nurnberg; Christopher Eric (b. May 12, 1965); and Tract DeAnn (b. July 3, 1969). The Proffitts reside in Trenton. Lenora (b. March 19, 1921) came to Spickard with her parents as a small child. She married Bert Washburn (b. Sept. 5, 1920), son of Alva and Ellen
Griffin Washburn. Bert has been in the construction business most of his life. They are the parents of one son, Dennie Nolan (b. March 9, 1947). Dennie is employed by the Missouri Highway
Department.

Huey Black of Spickard Dies

Huey J. Black, 78 of Spickard, died at 5:50 Monday evening at the Axtell Hospital in Princeton, after a lingering illness. The body was removed to the Wise funeral home in Spickard, where services will be conducted at 2 P.M., Wednesday, with burial in the Spickard Cemetery.

There is no scheduled visitation.

Mr. Black was a retired employee of the Rock Island Railroad and a veteran of World War I

He was born Feb. 17, 1891 in Mercer Co., Missouri, the son of Hugh and Susan King Black. He was married to Bessie Davis Nov. 30, 1917

Survivors include his wife, Bessie, of the home, one son Roy Black and one daughter Mrs. Bert Washburn, both of Spickard; two grandchildren, Mrs. Jim Proffitt of Trenton and Dennie Washburn of Spickard; two great-grandchildren and one brother King Black of Falls, Michigan, and three sisters Mrs. Maggie Alley of Mercer, Mrs. Roy Holt of Garnet, Kansas, and Mrs. Roy Groves of Leon, Iowa.

My great-grandfather was Armstead King, the older brother of John and my Great-grandmother, his wife, was Charity Venable, sister of Louisa Venable King. I wondered what happened to John & Louisa after 1870. I thought maybe the had followed Charity to Indiana where their twin brothers, Jesse & Augustus had gone. charity went there sometime after 1864 following the death of Armstead in the Civil War. she remarried in 1867. I have a lot of information the the Venable family. Do you know what may have become of Squire Venable, younger brother of Louisa and Charity? The last anyone can seem to find is when he was living in Carroll County with his mother and step-father. She has incorrectly stated that Riley was the son of Bird Marion, however, he was actually the son of Nathaniel Matthew (Mat) Marion and Sarah J. Collins. I do have copies of the death certificate for Riley Marion verifying this information, although I grew up knowing that portion of my family history. Mat Marion is buried in the Old Fisher River Church Cemetery in Mt. Airy. Bird is Riley's brother - his name was actually Burden Marion, but he was known by the nickname "Bird". She has incorrectly stated that Riley was the son of Bird Marion, however, he was actually the son of Nathaniel Matthew (Mat) Marion and Sarah J. Collins. I do have copies of the death certificate for Riley Marion verifying this information, although I grew up knowing that portion of my family history. Mat Marion is buried in the Old Fisher River Church Cemetery in Mt. Airy. Bird is Riley's brother - his name was actually Burden Marion, but he was known by the nickname "Bird". She has incorrectly stated that Riley was the son of Bird Marion, however, he was actually the son of Nathaniel Matthew (Mat) Marion and Sarah J. Collins. I do have copies of the death certificate for Riley Marion verifying this information, although I grew up knowing that portion of my family history. Mat Marion is buried in the Old Fisher River Church Cemetery in Mt. Airy. Bird is Riley's brother - his name was actually Burden Marion, but he was known by the nickname "Bird". She has incorrectly stated that Riley was the son of Bird Marion, however, he was actually the son of Nathaniel Matthew (Mat) Marion and Sarah J. Collins. I do have copies of the death certificate for Riley Marion verifying this information, although I grew up knowing that portion of my family history. Mat Marion is buried in the Old Fisher River Church Cemetery in Mt. Airy. Bird is Riley's brother - his name was actually Burden Marion, but he was known by the nickname "Bird". I read the Queries section in the SCGA Journal today and saw your query about the Marions. I probably can't add a lot to what you have, but I was hoping that you might help me fill in my data.

If you go to my web site at www.marshallgenealogy.org you will find Sarah J. Collins and Mat Marion. Also I have a Riley Marion, son of Bird Marion and grandson of Mat Marion. However, I do not have information about Riley Bettie Alma Marion. Since this is your family line I was hoping that you could fill in some of that line for me.

Attached is a document that shows everything I have on Daniel Marion's line (son of Bartholomew Marion). As you can see my data is sparse and I am interested in filling in what I am missing.

I was pleased to receive your email today. I have been working on documenting my direct Marion line for the past year or so. I have actually spent much more time working on my Brown family history, than my mother's Marion line. I do have quite a bit of information on the Marions, however.

What I can tell you is that my mother was Bettie Alma Marion and she married my father, Carmel Louis Brown in Surry County in 1952. My mother was the next to the youngest of Riley Marion's 10 children. Riley Marion was married to Nora Gillespie and they lived down a dirt road just off the Red Brush Road between Dobson and Mt. Airy. Riley was a tobacco farmer and he and Nora were very hardworking people.


Here is the break-down of the Riley Marion family:

Ola Marion Atkinson, in her book on the Marion family, unfortunately, got Riley out of place in her documentation. She has incorrectly stated that Riley was the son of Bird Marion, however, he was actually the son of Nathaniel Matthew (Mat) Marion and Sarah J. Collins. I do have copies of the death certificate for Riley Marion verifying this information, although I grew up knowing that portion of my family history. Mat Marion is buried in the Old Fisher River Church Cemetery in Mt. Airy. Bird is Riley's brother - his name was actually Burden Marion, but he was known by the nickname "Bird". I am attaching a link below to a story about Bird Marion and his link to the Carroll County (Hillsville, Va) Courthouse shoot-out.

The Nathaniel Matthew (Mat) Marion family is as follows:

Nathaniel Matthew (Mat) Marion b. April 21, 1847, d. Mar. 28, 1914; married Sarah J. Collins on Dec. 16, 1868 in Surry County, NC; Sarah J. Collins b. 1843, d. 1903, they are buried in the Old Fisher River Church Cemetery, Mt. Airy, NC.

Here is a link to a story about Burden "Bird" Marion that you may find interesting. My daddy used to tease my mother about the fact that her uncle was an "outlaw" accused of holding the reigns of the horses for the Allen boys who murdered the court officials at Hillsville, VA.

I do happen to have a tin-type picture I have scanned that I will attach, so you can see what Bird Marion looked like. I'll also include a picture of my great-grandpa Mat's tombstone and my grandpa Riley and grandma Nora's 50th wedding anniversary; Front Row: Riley and Nora Marion, Left to right: Dallas Marion, Herman Marion, Alma Marion Brown (my mother), Arlie Marion, Ellis Marion, Dorothy Marion Barker, and Bessie Marion Hutchens.

I hope this information is helpful to you. I will take a look at your website tomorrow when I have a little more time and see how closely we match up. I am very interested in learning where Bartholomew Marion is buried, if you have any contacts or resources to point me in the right direction. I am interested in joining the Daughters of the American Revolution and I would like to join on the basis of his service. I do have a copy of his application for Revolutionary War Pension.

Also, I wonder if you have information on our immigrant ancestor Marions who settled in Berkeley County, SC. I did recently purchase a book on the French Hugenots who settled in South Carolina. It mentions our Marion lines in it.

I am a descendant of the Marshall family and have been doing some research online. I found my name in the Family tree website but the information is incorrect. My mother's name is Laura Eleanor Roberts, her mother was Bertalina Marshall. My maiden name was Kathryn Sue Niederhauser, it was not spelled correctly in the listing. Also, my sister, Nancy Jean Niederhauser is deceased, she passed away in 1981. The listing shows myself as deceased.
