| 32109 | Marshal 0375, pg. 2, 9 ____________________________________________________ From: Mike Mmlmonroe@earthlink. net To: Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2003 10:48 PM Subject: Updates for website Mr Marshall, Pitman and Intha's 4th (and last) child. You have "Pickney Pittman Lewis". The Family Bible lists "Pinckney Pitman Lewis". The name "Pinckney" was used interchangbly with "Pinkney" ( particularly in the census), and was often abbreviated to "Pink". We already mentioned that Pitman was spelled both ways, although two "T"s was more widely used during the 1700's and one "I" was more widely used during the 1800's. My records suggest that Pinckney Pitman Lewis was born 18-August-1847 not 8-August-1847 as you suggest. (per gravemarker). You have his date-of-death correct. | LEWIS, Pinckney Pitman (I11858)

| 32111 | Marshal 0375, pg. 9 ____________________________________________________ From: Mike M (mlmonroe@earthlink. net) To: Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2003 10:48 PM Subject: Updates for website Mr Marshall, Charlton Pinckney Lewis' date-of-birth is uncertain, but I suspect June 1894. On the 1900 census, he was listed as born in June 1893 at the age of 6. On the 1920 census, he was listed at the age of 25. I suspect some of the confusion was related to the census being taken in June. Charlton Pinckney Lewis died in Rutherford County in March 1933. Charlton is buried at Mountain Creek Baptist, Rutherford County, NC. Charlton married Lela Queen. They did not have any children. LeIa was born 20-October-1901 and died 7-January-1936. Lela Queen was the daughter of Adin R Queen of Rutherford County. Adin appears on the 1900 Rutherford County census in Morgan Township, district 142, sheet 3 at the age of 32. Adin appears on the 1920 census, Rutherford County, district 170, at the age of 52, and LeIa is living at home at the age of 18. | LEWIS, Charlton P. (I11860)

| 32112 | Marshal 0375, pg. 9 ____________________________________________________ From: Mike M (mlmonroe@earthlink. net) To: Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2003 10:48 PM Subject: Updates for website Mr Marshall, Gladys Lewis was born 21-March-i897 and died 18-July-1987. She married William Fred Gibson in August 1915 and had 6 children, but I don't think it was the three that you have listed.., it looks like you've confused children with grandchildren. William Fred Gibson was born 4-July-i897, died 4-June-i940, and is buried at Mountain Creek Baptist, Rutherford County, NC. Gladys is also buried at Mountain Creek Baptist, Rutherford County, NC. William Fred Gibson and Gladys Lewis's oldest son was William Lewis Gibson (as you suggest). William Lewis Gibson was married twice, and his second wife was Louise Kiser as you suggest. Louise attended the 2002 Lewis Family Reunion and I believe she is still living. William and Louise had 3 children --- you have 1 child -- Ronald Gibson. Their other 2 children are Carolyn and Doug... whom you have listed as William Lewis Gibson's siblings.., not as his children. The last that I heard, Ron, Carolyn, and Doug are all still living. | LEWIS, Gladys (I11862)

"Boatwright" seems more widely used prior to 1875. "Boatright" seems more widely used following 1875. Pinckney Pitman Lewis and Hattie L Boatwright were married around 3-September-1891, supposedly performed by B. H. Hoyle ( Methodist). There are different ideas concerning the location --- some say Hattieās hometown near Charlotte, others say Rutherford County. It may have been performed near Charlotte and recorded in Rutherford County. Hattie L Boatwright was born 1 -November-1866 instead of 11-Novernber-1866. The date of death matches her grave marker. Pinckney Pitman Lewis and Hattie L Boatwright had 8 children as you suggest. Lila was born 24-September-1892. | BOATWRIGHT, Hattie Louvenia (I11859)

I have no information about his first wife, but they had two sons, William and James. !Martin is buried in the family cemetery; go down "Dusty Trail" off Baux Mountain Road in Forsyth County, NC. I have visited his grave site. Some sources give Forsyth County as his place of death. But Forsyth County was not formed until 1849. Until then it was part of Stokes County. Marshall 0152, pg. 4 - This source gives his first wife's name as Susanna Basel. I can find no basis for this, but there are other Marshall's who think that might have been her name. Marshall 0163, p. 1 - Letter from Michael Marshall. He speculates that Martins first wife might have been named Sarah Boswell. There are family stories that his first wife was Sarah Basil. Michael says that he has seen Boswell spelled several different ways similar to Basil. If that speculation eventually shows merit, that it is possible that Martin's first wife could have been Eleanor's (his second wife's) sister. Scanned - Picture of Tombstone -------------------------------------------------------------- According to the documentation below Martin's first name was William. | 32121 | Marshall 0001; Marshall 0004; Marshall 0005; Marshall 0017, Pg. 136, Marshall 0022 - John Marion Marshall had twelve children by his wife, Christina Sparger. Then he left his family and went to Texas with another Frankie Pate. There it is reported that he raised another family of twelve children. I have no information about his death or where he is buried. !Marshall 0241, pp. 1, 9 - This source, a letter from Robert K. Marshall to Gurney Robertson, dated 9/17/1925, sheds some light on John's second wife, Frankie Pate. It says that John wrote a letter to "Uncle Sam" (Samuel Edward Marshall?) and a letter to Martha Eleanor (Marshall) Saunders asking if he could return to Surry County with his "second wife." I am not sure that either letter exists now, or maybe they never did. More information - Apparently he and Frankie went to Indianapolis, Indiana. There he met a man who owned a ranch in the area of San Antonio, Texas. The man hired John to go to Texas and look after his ranch. While John was in route to Texas, the man died in Indianapolis. The census data below places him firmly in San Antonio, Texas in 1880. He sent it to me January 5, 2002 in response to a message I broadcast to my distribution list offering a $100 reward for anyone who could find John. Dear David,It is nice to get your emails although I seldom respond. I'm not sure if I ever told you this or not (I probably did, but it's been too many years to know) but my Aunt Bettye Marshall Robertson told me that her husband Merlin actually went to John Marion's grave in Texas. Merlin and Bettye lived in Waco for many years and my recollection is that she said Merlin set out to track his down and met one of John's sons or grandsons-she couldn't remember what town the grave was located in. Merlin and Bettye were cousins-Merlin's grandfather was John Marion and I believe that Bettye was John Marion's great-granddaughter. Bettye died in 1976 and I had talked with her about this probably in the early 70's so I am fuzzy on this one but it seems that John changed his name. I'm pretty sure she said he became just John Marion and dropped the Marshall completely. Well, that should be enough to confuse all of us- perhaps someday all of this will be discovered. Keep up the good work-I could use the $100 to pay for Xmas but I don't think I have the time to do any research. Perhaps we could check all of the death records in the Texas counties. Best regards for the new year, Gil | MARSHALL, John Marion (I38)
