| 32677 | Marshall 0248B - Gedcom from Larry Shelton. According to John P. Alderman, Thomas Payne fathered eleven children. Carroll Co. Va. 1850 census: annotated by John Perry Alderman. He said there eleven children before the census. There are but nine in the census book. According to my source, a Nancy Lyons came to live with Thomas and Sarah after Sarah became ill to help with taking care of Sarah and the children. Nancy became Thomas's common-in-law wife and born to them were two children. I have copies of William H. Lyons Marriage certificate dated August 27, 1870, Dobson, N.C listing his father as Thomas Payne and mother as Nancy Lyons. I also have a copy of a death certificate for a Josephine Lyons Bell Bonne Terre, Mo. dated Feb 9, 1932. When Josephine married Stephen Bell she listed her father as unknown and her mother as Nancy Lyons. On her death certificate her father is listed as Payne. Birthplace Carroll Co.Va. 1-9-1855. Mother unknown. In 1860 census of Carroll Co. Thomas Payne and Nancy Lyons were listed in same household. Nancy Lyons was the informant at Thomas Payne death in 1865. | PAYNE, Thomas (I34183)

According to Louise Converse in her book "Decendents of Abraham Hawks'' ca 1760-1838, there was no age nor cause of death listed for Nathanial, Jr, but the death was reported by his father, Nathaniel. He came to Winston Salem, N.C. and met my Aunt Opal. He was originally from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, but after his marriage they resided in N.C. until my Aunt Opal's death. After which he took Irene and Celia Faye to his parents home in Mt. Pleasant and for years we completely lost touch with them. Mama always said she was an orphan raised by her Uncle Billy Payne and wife Sarah Stoneman. She was called "Sissy Payne". In 1870 census, she was in the home of William and Sarah Payne, listed as age 8. Her father Mordecai MCCraw enlisted in Co. E, 29th Va. in August 6, 1861 about 6 months after Grandma Louisa was born. He died in Lynchburg, Va. hospital from fever June 4, 1863. Therefore she never knew her parents.
