57. Nancy Jane Richardson was born July 13, 1849, in Indiana. She married Jesse Spriggs Powell on January 24, 1867 at Bloomington, Monroe County, Indiana. Jesse was born on February 2, 1847, probably at South Bethany, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

The Powells moved from Monroe County, Indiana, to Nevada, Missouri, sometime after 1870. They lived in Missouri for a time and later relocated to Aliza, Illinois. Aliza is about five miles east of Muscatine, Iowa. Jesse was a farmer there, owning some 640 acres at one time.

Nancy Jane died on July 6, 1891, possibly with another child. After her death, Jesse lost most of his wealth . He lived at such places as Wataga, Illinois, and LaCrosse, Wisconsin. He may have remarried but no proof of that has been found. Jesse died on March 4, 1923, and both he and Nancy are interred at Edgington Cemetery, Rock Island County, Edgington, Illinois.

Their children:

71. i John William Powell, born October 22, 1867
72. ii Sarah Jane Powell, born January 30, 1871.
73. iii Minnie Mae Powell, born December 18, 1872.

David I thought you should be included in on this.

Interesting facts have arisen in the family of James Hamilton Vanhoy's his wife Frances b. Dec. 1790 Va. When and were her and James were married remains unknown in actuality but by mathematical equations it is suspected that they were married no earlier that DEC 1805 and not later than the summer of 1806.
James's Brother Abraham married Verlinda Marshall in Dec. 1805 and their first child, a son, was named John Marshall Vanhoy.
James and Frances had 11 children of which there were five boys and the youngest was named John Marshall Vanhoy and is buried at Love Cemetery, Martin County, IN at his father's right hand.
Given that before 1850 it was almost impossible to track down who was who we have all been left to deal with what written documents our ancestors have left behind to help in our research. I suspect that James H. Vanhoy's wife Frances's maiden name was Marshall and that they were married in a double ceremony with Abraham and Verlinda in Stokes County, NC.
Now on to the other part. I was under the impression that James and Frances had 5 boys and 5 girls but this past two weeks has uncovered some interesting facts.
James Hamilton Vanhoy died Aug. 20, 1845 and he died intestate (without a will).
The following summer a Probate hearing was held and a probate agreement signed or marked by members of the family leaving the estate to Frances, Rebecca, and Charles. The Document was signed on Aug. 3, 1846 and filed at the end of the month. In attendance were the following;

Rebecca Vanhoy
Joseph Hays & his wife
Elizabeth Hays (formerly Elizabeth Dobson born 1811 NC)
Milton D. Love and wife Rachel (Vanhoy) Love
John Vanhoy
Clayton Vanhoy & wife Mary (Walker) Vanhoy
William M. Fair & wife Nancy (Vanhoy b. Feb 19, 1808) Fair
Charles Vanhoy, Attorney

Not in Attendance or mentioned are Abraham Vanhoy who married Nancy Sullivan
and Permelia (Vanhoy) presumed to have died in Morgan County, IN in 1839

The odd thing that I caught was the attendance of Joseph Hays & his wife Elizabeth.
I did some research through the Family Search web site and found Joseph Hays married to Elizabeth Dobson b. 1811 NC. They were married Aug. 1830. I decided to go back a bit farther. The 70 Acres that James Hamilton Vanhoy purchased in 1829 in Perry Township, Martin County, IN. was from William and Elizabeth Dobson and there is a record of a Joseph Dobson who married an Elizabeth Vanhoy In NC on 31 Oct., 1826, I strongly suspect that this Elizabeth Vanhoy is the daughter of James Hamilton Vanhoy and Frances Marshall.
I also believe that Elizabeth Dobson b. 1811 NC is Elizabeth Vanhoy and she left some clues to her identity behind.
Joseph Hays and his wife Elizabeth Dobson had seven children and their first son b. 1831 was named William Clayton Hays the fifth child a girl b. 1840 was named Nancy and married a Stuckey.

The Census of 1830 for Perry Twp. Martin County, IN shows 5 girls in the household of James Vanhoy. The Census of 1840 only shows two. Two of the three that are not there are Rachel Vanhoy who married Milton D, Love Dec. 1835
and Permelia who married Lewis Scott Feb. 3, 1833 in Morgan County, IN.
The other I suspect was the widow of Joseph W. or William J. Dobson and married Joseph Hays Aug. 1830.

I meant to say that the Marshall family, among the women, would give their sons the middle name Marshall. This was passed onto me by a gentleman that had done considerable research on the Marshall family also. That is why I think that Frances is in fact a Marshall.

I leave you with this and if I have left out anything or there are questions please feel free to ask.

I hope that I have done the best to explain my presumption and the research that it is based upon.

Sincerely:
Paul D. VanHoy

The following summer a Probate hearing was held and a probate agreement signed or marked by members of the family leaving the estate to Frances, Rebecca, and Charles. The Document was signed on Aug. 3, 1846 and filed at the end of the month. In attendance were the following;

Rebecca Vanhoy
Joseph Hays & his wife
Elizabeth Hays (formerly Elizabeth Dobson born 1811 NC)
Milton D. Love and wife Rachel (Vanhoy) Love
John Vanhoy
Clayton Vanhoy & wife Mary (Walker) Vanhoy
William M. Fair & wife Nancy (Vanhoy b. Feb 19, 1808) Fair

Well, basically Tombstones don't lie and when they agree with the Census records you have to think. The chart shows two Nancys and Betty Hicks & I have been chasing a "Ghost" called Ada Vanhoy, who supposedly was the daughter of James H. Vanhoy and found nothing to support it. So basically the only thing that got me going was that Kathleen High in Milwaukee said there had to be another Nancy and I thought about the law at that period in time and a Sister would have no legal claim on the estate of her brother but a daughter would and going through census records 1820-1840 led me in the right direction. Along with the fact that Permelia Vanhoy married her husband in Morgan County.

Now, my wife says I might be wrong about Catherine being a twin. John M. Vanhoy was born on Jan 25, 1830. My wife, a nurse says it is possible that Catherine was probably born later in the same year but I disagree as then she would not have been born by the time the census was taken, so that is how I determined that she is a twin.

Okay, to the issue of Lavinia Vanhoy, she is not the daughter of Abraham Vanhoy and Verlinda Marshall, but they did have a daughter named Ellenor C. Vanhoy who married Harmon Miller on Aug 15, 1832

Lavinia Vanhoy, on the other hand is the daughter of William Vanhoy and Margaret "Sally" Jacks b. abt 1828-1830 and married Thomas C. Miller Feb. 29, 1844.

Both Family Group Sheets compiled by W.L. Hubka information obtained Stokes County, NC marriage records.

David, from information from the tombstones of William M. Fairs and his wife Nancy (Vanhoy) it has been determined that this Nancy is not the Nancy born 1785 instead this Nancy was born Jan. 19, 1808, She also married William M. Fair on Oct 23, 1827 in Stokes County on the very same day as the Marriage of Clayton W. Vanhoy born 1807 and son of James Hamilton Vanhoy.

James Hamilton Vanhoy died intestate on Aug 20, 1845 in Martin County, Ind. and the following summer of 1846 there was a gathering of family to sign or affix their mark to a probate agreement. By the laws of that period the only way Nancy (Vanhoy) Fair would have any legal claim on his estate would be the fact that she was the daughter of James Hamilton Vanhoy & his wife Frances.

So a lot of people are under the assumption that Nancy Vanhoy, sister of James H. Vanhoy and daughter of John Vanhoy and Jemima Marshall, born 1785 is the Nancy Vanhoy that married William M. Fair b. 1805 and the assumption is incorrect.

So now I have discovered the existence of not two Nancy Vanhoy 1 born 1785 the other b. 1817 but a third the oldest daughter of James H. Vanhoy b. Jan. 19, 1808 Stokes County, NC married Oct 23, 1827 at Love Methodist Church, NC. d. Dec. 30, 1850 Morgan County, Indiana buried Old Williams Cemetery, Morgan County, Ind.

Have a Happy Day.

Pittman Lewis' name was interchangably "Pittman" and "Pitman". I strongly suspect that Pittman's maternal great-grandmother had a surname of "Pittman". While the name was commonly spelled "Pittman" during the 1700's, it was more commonly spelled "Pitman" during the 1800's. Pitman was born 14-August-1789, and died 21-April-1858 according to both the Family Bible and his gravemarker. Pitman's will is on record at the Rutherford County Courthouse.

Pitman Lewis married Intha Dalton in May 1837 in Rutherford County.
Intha Dalton's birthyear is uncertain and her gravemarker states her birthdate as "About 1805".
Intha was "about 32" when she married Pitman. Intha already had a daughter named "Jane Caroline Dalton" when Intha and Pitman were married. Jane's birthdate on the 1900 census ( Rutherford County, Green Hill Township ) was "Dec 1831", so Jane would have been about 5 years old when Pitman and Intha were married.

Jane married George Martin Edwards in October 1848 in Rutherford County and had 6 children starting with Thomas Pinkney Edwards in October 1849. Pitman did not mention step-dau Jane Caroline Dalton Lewis Edwards in his will.
Pitman and Intha had 4 children of their own.

The oldest was Elizabeth Lewis, born 9-October-1838 according to the Family Bible, and Elizabeth married William Henry Cantrell and moved near Boiling Springs, Spartanburg County, SC. See the 1880 Spartanburg County SC census, Cherokee Township, district 140, sheet 19, line 36, house 173, William was listed as 49 years old and ill with what appears to be "Chronic-Dysentery". Elizabeth is listed as age 41, with 8 children. I have serious reservations about the census taker's record-keeping and suggestion that Elizabeth was born in SC -- I suspect she was actually born in Rutherford County.

William Henry Cantrell appears to have died by the 1900 census, and Elizabeth appears on the 1900 census in Spartanburg County, SC, at the age of 61.
I do not know when Elizabeth Lewis Cantrell died, but sometime after the 1900 census.
